I thought of myself as a "fiscally conservative yet socially liberal" person. Then, after I got to college and experienced the world a bit, I realized you couldn't be both. The turn was profound and permanent.

I went from being a conservative at age 20 to a liberal by age 24 and have gotten more progressive in all the years since.
