It takes place on an alien planet, and everything is either some kind of flavor of alien or android.

It was ok but it could have been *excellent*, and I think that was the issue.
A heavily flawed season 1 is carried by a vastly-improved season 2, and I could see this as an origin story of sorts for Master Chief.
