Sports has the same social and cultural value as art. Any criticism you can make of sports, you can also make of art. Any value you can find in art you can also find in sport.

Back in the youth we used to say stuff like "Bike jocks are still jocks" because we punks had a core suspicion/criticism/dislike of sports and sports culture, but I have made a complete 180 on this.

in speed skating, you can leave your first skater on the front, and the skaters in the draft can reach out and 'share' that benefit with the lead rider.

apparently they used to do it the cycling way until this new approach was pioneered to great success and then everyone adopted it.

in cycling, the more exchanges you have, the more you slow down your time - because the front of your group is now one rider further back. fewer exchanges is better.

but, there's no way to push a rider in front of you.

one thing that's really interesting is that in long track, the first skater stays on the front while the others draft.

in cycling this would be a great way to get a very slow time... but in skating, the second and third skaters reach out to push the skater in front of them.

spouse and i keep talking about how speed skating - both long track and short track - is a lot like track cycling.
