What we lose when weather balloons don’t fly Meteorologists are launching fewer weather balloons across the United States as the National Weather Service loses staff. Some worry forecasts will suffer.

I have noticed a significant degradation in winds aloft accuracy recently, especially on transcons. I wondered if this was the reason and it seems to be. Not a huge deal by itself but the trend toward less atmospheric observation is disturbing. (gift link)
