πŸ“Chicago-bound Amtrak Saluki 390

Used to take this line almost weekly when I worked in Chicago. Communication from staff re: track sharing stops has improved since then. Ridership also looks good. Can’t beat $14 for a 2-hour trip!

What would it take for Amtrak to get ROW on this segment?

Love seeing how the locals adapt their travel during rain and cold. Proper gear and infrastructure help, but they also embrace more dampness and chaos than most.

Up since 3 AM waiting on a delayed flight, so why not toss a hot take into the ether? The 15-minute city and similar ideals are creeping into mainstream discourse thanks to demonization from the right, who frame it as authoritarian and dystopian. Is this a reincarnation of NIMBYism or smthg else?

I agree, especially about unions, but e-commerce pays better, and in a tough economy, most people will prioritize self-preservation. I might choose differently, but it is a rational decision. Maybe this is where transit agencies can do a better job touting the intangible benefits of the job

As long as agencies are too cash-strapped to compete with the pay and benefits of e-commerce, they might need to emphasize the intangible perks of being a transit operator. Will it be enough though? Saying β€œthis is a good job if you’re a people person” is pretty desperate

There’s also the issue of Amazon and other large shipping and e-commerce companies siphoning CDL drivers from transit agencies. From my perspective as a transit planner at the time, this seemed like a major cause of service reductions during the pandemic yet barely anyone talked about it
