Ah, the argument in this mailer is just the less blatant, more palatably presented version of the idea a St. Paulite once argued on Facebook (I have a screenshot saved, somewhere!) that city residents should “have one vote for every year they’ve lived in the city.” Provincial, exclusionary, etc.

(To be clear I think this is very sad and also this is where my brain went with this early in the morn! I hope his offline life improves.)

inflection and in a resignedly sarcastic and world-weary yet also not hostile and “this is how it is” way possible! Anyway, I think of this often, especially the “oh GAWD this is great” in annoying crowds/when around big groups and of course when I’ve visited NYC as an adult and used the subway!

It was my first-ever time in NYC (school trip) and so of course a great idea was to have the rural midwesterners ride the subway for one or two stops just to do it! Our giant group was plunging up the staircase to exit, messing up the flow, when the businessman said that with the most classic NYC

but “MMM, chwerry” is also in our family lexicon as meaning “ah this is good I like it” and so used thusly to good comedic effect! Another one is “oh GAWD this is great, welcome to New YAWK,” said by what I remember to be a very stereotypical middle aged businessman wearing a fedora-like hat, lol.

Long ago on a family trip, a random messy, happy toddler outside a rest stop said, in classic toddler voice, “MMMM, chwerryy!!” whilst eating some messy cherry candy or popsicle (again this was awhile ago; can’t remember exactly). To this day we repeat that whenever the word cherry comes up—

So this season is the “other teams with bigger stars than the wolves get to foul us however they want, and they get to flop and do whatever they want to get weak fouls” thing going to continue? Because if so, it’s gonna be a very dull and long season! NBA officiating makes no sense to me.

There was one dude who walked through the march in the opposite direction with his phone on his forehead like that heads up game thing and his phone screen said ”TRUMP” on a red background and it was silly and laughable

See King County Metro for (imo) an excellent example of a well-done set of modern bus liveries—that actually cover the whole bus! I have never understood why MT chose to have large parts of their regular buses be plain white. That, and I don’t even love-love MT’s BRT paint jobs, either.

I‘ve long felt that Metro Transit should use a modern version of Twin City Rapid Transit‘s late period PCC yellow/green livery, or their classic yellow/green/burgandy-ish color (could sub in blue). Would be so much nicer! MT’s buses especially look so meh (and show dirt) w/so much blank white!

So doesn’t this number alone render the argument that “the yearly savings in O&M $ will be so big“ moot? $20 mil is how many years of ops? + the need to repay the feds as you mentioned

lol, am back in MN for a bit after having lived in a v different accented part of the country for 3 yrs—and I am tickled at every turn when I hear anyone speak in public omg it’s so cute & is cracking me up! I guess 3 yrs was enough to reset my brain & be able to hear the accents as an outsider! 😆

—and of course given how much of the twin cities were really just various streetcar suburbs within the larger cities, or, later on, no different than richfield, columbia heights, etc., that rings true! “Mpls is a city of neighborhoods” = it’s a “city“ of leafy streetcar suburbs w a small core

It took me a while to understand why people at my college who were from NE coastal cities said that most of Mpls & St. Paul were “like suburbs“ to them or at least pretty suburban in character. I eventually realized that to them the typical neighborhood was like an older streetcar suburb In the NE—

It’s never going to be efficient as it stands today to serve people in the entirety of low-density, cul-de-sac suburbs like Woodbury with public transit. Change in density is needed first, and/or the much-vaunted canadian suburban model of freq. reg bus service on arterials (way more efficient)

Some small cities & suburban areas have had to kill microtransit pilots because everybody (understandably!) likes the idea of their own personal, publicly subsidized Uber service, and the costs run out of control! If your transit service’s costs/rider served stay high w more riders, that’s not great

Unlike regular bus or esp. rail, more riders on microtransit doesn’t add to efficiency, it detracts from it and creates a cascading spiral of increased costs to maintain wait times/service. Small vehicles & /point to point service means many more vehicles/drivers needed; not good use of transit $
