A friend flew into MSP in last few days. Got in a classic “what brings you here” convo. The woman he was next to said “I’m coming to visit my husband; he’s an ICE agent.” Friend shocked into silence; then said, ” I think he should quit his job.” Woman: “Yeah, he’s been thinking about quitting…”

To those in the TC, rural immigrants know you (in addition to supporters & allies in rural areas) are standing up for them, and it means a lot to literally thousands upon thousands of people who live a world away from Powderhorn or Whittier.

They played backing music throughout, and ended in a beautiful & emotional song in Spanish that I wish I could've understood. Multiple clergy were there, and it ended in a collaborative bilingual prayer. Again, all this in a county Trump won by a quite a lot.

It was a vigil not only for Alex + Renee, but for community members who have been unjustly taken from my hometown. The turnout was amazing, on a brutal prairie-wind-whipped freezing night. Looked like 150 people, at least, which is amazing. All of MN is standing up, even hours away from the metro.

If it gives you a bit of hope, the special thing that both broke + inspired me today was seeing a stream of my rural MN hometown--an amazingly diverse meatpacking city--come together for a vigil. Their community watch FB page made their profile pic an image of Alex that says "Unidos con Alex Pretti"

Please, as a Minnesotan—stop. Not only is AI terrible and fake, it doesn’t “work;” if you did this ICE would murder or maim you. They MURDERED another Minnesotan this morning. Stop. It’s not a game just because you’re not here.

Speechless; we’re into almost unbelievably symbolic biblical parable-like territory. The women SAVED THE ICE AGENT’s LIFE, despite having been detained, despite everything brutal that has happened to the people of MN. Morals, empathy, and care for others no matter who are a thing—unless you’re ICE.

The @startribune.com ’s insistence on framing most of the reaction to metro surge as “rural urban divide” elides so much, but erases the widespread diversity of southern MN especially. There’s town after town—mostly meatpacking and factory towns, but others too—home to people who hate this.

ICE is in my rural MN hometown today for the 1st time since the surge began. My hometown is one of the most diverse places in MN, and ppl—including former classmates—are full of fear. People have already been taken. There was an observer training yeserday w/250 ppl. Rural MN doesn’t all “love ice” 😓

I feel like this is also why they hate Seattle and Portland, which were still 85% and 92%, respectively, in 1970, and like Minneapolis have a very progressive white population relative to much of the country! They can't stand it!

There’s been much discourse on “why do they keep attacking MN/Minneapolis,” and this photo sums one reason up. We have a huge number of very “average” looking white people who welcome & stick up for their Muslim, immigrant, refugee, etc. neighbors! They hate us because we care about everyone!
