I get the #nokings stuff for America. Truly. But here, in the UK, if an elected ‘monarch’ decided to rip down the East Wing of Buckingham Palace there would be a peasants’ revolt.

I’m a 50(ish🤪)-yr-old Brit. I walked through the White House in c.1985. I’ve been a lover of US history ever since. I visited DC with my wife just before lockdown but couldn’t enter the people’s house like we wanted but that’s okay. I’m glad she saw it in its glory, before this week’s abomination.

Raze it. I would rebuild Eleanor’s legacy. And I would strip the whole White House of any gold frippery. I’m British, with a love of flouncy official nonsensical-ness but Trump has no class, no charm, no honour, no humility and no grace. He deserves no remembrance, other than pity. And prison.

Johnson is an abomination of a Christian. I hope his children (his son particularly) reject him. I’m the son of a Methodist minister (and missionary) and, while I’m not especially virtuous myself, I believe in the Ten Commandments as generic life rules.

Serious question: how do they balance their ‘Christianity’ with their perpetual examples of ‘false witness’? Can they spell the word ‘hypocrisy’?

I’ve now seen photo examples of the rampant vandalism of the East Wing of the White House and I’ve changed my mind. No longer will I hope for the actuarial tables to take their toll; I want that crass, vile mendicant (and his supplicants) to suffer in this life. Roll on the restoration of sanity.

The only thing I’m (half)sure about is that if Tumpelthinskin dies in office, so does MAGA. I’ve never rooted so hard for the actuarial tables in my life🤪.

There are 1,118 days to the next (Democratic) president and 1,193 days to a restoration of sanity (barring the 25th Amendment). Stay strong my American friends. Long fights give solid wins. ❤️

He always does. But a dog’s love is forever (as long as there’s food😂). He’s 10 now so we won’t have him that much longer but we celebrate him every day … and the cats just love him. Truly.

I’ve got four of the little gits and a chocolate labrador ((with chronic hip arthritis). Love ‘em all but the monthly bills are crippling (I’ve also got a horse and chickens🤣).

The undertones and echos of Hitler and his thugs horrify everyone this side of the Atlantic. What’s worse is the creeping insidiousness making its way here (Farage et al and the Tory party conference). Time to re-read Orwell, strap on the metal jockstrap and throw off British insouciance.

Looking from the outside (as someone who’s loved/read/studied American history for nearly 40 years) I can’t help asking: how has the US fallen so far, so fast? I thought I (kinda) understood her. But, apparently, not.

Update again: cat found. Everyone indoors, warm and relaxing. Me with replenished scotch. If only life were always so simple.

Update: I haven’t yet found my cat (three of them are in and sheltering from the oncoming ravages of Storm Amy) but I’m now stumbling and bumbling around my garden in the winds and rain with a glass of scotch. I will find the little bugger … but I’ll have fun at the same time😜.

OK. I appreciate your reply and thank you. However, would it not be better to be inside the tent p*ssing out (LBJ) than outside p*ssing in? America is such a force for moral good (albeit currently depleting said good) that any miscarriages could be addressed from within.

I agree with the premise of your post Tom, with the status quo as it is, but shouldn’t the US actually be part of the ICC? Or leading it as moral arbiter? The world’s policeman and all that?

This isn’t a left-right thing, a D-R thing, but a civility thing. My dad, a leading churchman in the UK hasn’t many years left and he loves the US like I do. Please let him see the world rebalance its axes before he leaves us. 💔

One day, hopefully, sanity will return.

Anyway, my point is, if there is a point, that I would like to be a cat or a dog. I love my life but I also love America. And she ain’t the America that I grew up loving, studying, revering, desiring.

Maybe because they’re between 4 and 10 years old and I’m … somewhat older. 😁

I have four aberrant insouciant felines and an utterly languid Labrador. In the north-east of England where the animals have minds of their own and don’t care about the America I grew up loving as much as I do.

To those who don’t know me, I’m currently hunting one of my cats in the wind and driving rain while wishing I could sit down with a glass of scotch. So, hello!

Currently, every day is a sad day for America and it has nothing to do with satisfying a woman or reading biology textbooks (alas… if only). My heart truly breaks for a country I love deeply and whose history I’ve studied deeply, but who I won’t visit again until a semblance of normality returns.
