People hear all kinds of inaccuracies about where students w/disabilties should apply to college, what happens in the admissions process, & what they can expect at college. In this post, I bust some common myths: https://bit.ly/GFLDCol2Β Β Β

On this day in queer history: October 6, 1998

Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old gay college student, was beaten and left tied to a fence near Laramie, Wyoming. He died six days later. His murder became a turning point, inspiring nationwide hate-crime protections.

I had a strong opinion on this but it’s getting stronger as I learn from my own sons’ experiences:

If fear of AI cheating means all major graded writing in high is completed in class, we deprive students of so much opportunity for students to develop as writers.

Become a Disability A.L.L.Y. in Your Community and Promote Inclusion for All Advocate for accessibility and equitable health with resources, images, and social media content.

Pleasantly surprised this was published by the CDC last month. Not surprised bc good people still work there, but disability has been attacked under anti-DEI measures. www.cdc.gov/disability-i...

An acrostic of the word ALLY: Acknowledge and respect individual experiences and abilities. Learn about different disability types. Leverage your influence to promote accessibility and inclusion. Yield the floor to people with disabilities to help identify and eliminate barriers.

Reading Rainbow emphasis is encouraging kids to read. The focus is not on teaching them to read. The mission is reading should be fun!

We are all readers, worthy of literacy. LeVar Burton said β€œbut you don’t have to take my word for it” because he wanted us to look to the books. That’s the beauty πŸ’š

And I’m not saying everything I read that is good has not been intentionally crafted, but instead of just thinking, β€œWow! What a a great phrase!”, I now also think, β€œDid this person write this themselves?”

It was a big victory (not a small one), but my ELA class partner with our Life Skills Support class to play games; socialize; and write, illustrate, and read stories together!

I despise how the existence of AI makes me question student writing now more than I did before.

When I see a well-crafted sentence or a well-placed colon, I pause more often than I did before…

Our 10th graders returned to our Life Skills support classrooms to read the stories they created based on their LSS peers’ ideas. It was wonderful listening to my students read aloud in compelling ways.

Then we got to play games and practice socials skills! #inclusion

Two Truths and a Lie About AI Here are three statements: Can you figure out which two are true? Students will try to cheat with AI. Students need help reasoning on their AI usage. Students talk to their teachers about their AI …

Today, I wrote about two truths and a lie about AI in the classroom…I’m here to talk about it + hear about what you are seeing lately too πŸ™‚

LESSON: #Inclusion & Storytelling

Today, our 10th grade ELA class combined with our life skills support (LSS) class. We played Uno, Jenga, Sorry, & puzzles. Then my coteacher & I read a story. Finally, my students asked questions of their LSS peers in small groups to generate a new story.

I know independent reading in class should be time where I, too, am reading (to model and to catch up on my own stack), but I also have been needing that time to stay on top of emails, feedback, and paperwork. #TeacherProblems

We’ll return in a couple days to read the stories aloud. The LSS class will be doing some illustrations in the meantime. We’ll end by returning to some games and social time.

My coteacher and I are already planning a return learning experience!

In ELA class, Ss will now craft a story based on their peers’ ideas. We’ve got Disney princesses, Michael Myers, deserts, Spider-Man, a Western setting, Italy, a lion trapped by a tiger, and so much more!

Creativity will be in high gear. And engagement was inspiring!

Students met each other, laughed, and worked to communicate. Our ELA Ss prepared story questions in advance and also provided options when their peers got stuck or needed to point to a choice. #disability

How to Get Students to Focus on Learningβ€”Not Grades With a few shifts in the classroom, teachers can encourage students to pay more attention to the skills they are building than to a number or letter score.

When students (and parents) are obsessed with grades, undoing that mindset is no easy task. Here are a few shifts you can consider to emphasize *learning* over scores. πŸ“šπŸŒ±
