Society Hill group approves $25,000 to fight bike lane protections on Spruce and Pine An overwhelming majority of Society Hill Civic Association board members approved the gift to Friends of Pine & Spruce during a contentious meeting Wednesday.

Harry Fenton, who was struck and killed by a hit and run driver in Fairmount Park, was a resident of Society Hill. He fought for better bike lanes on Spruce and Pine.

Fatal Bicycle Crash Report – September 2, 2025 A preliminary investigation details a tragic incident in the 16th District on Belmont Avenue, where a bicyclist was fatally struck by a vehicle. Two cars—a black Dodge Charger and a black Chrysler—were reportedly speeding northbound when one collided with the cyclist traveling east on Avenue of the Republic. The impact caused critical injuries, and the victim was later pronounced dead at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center at 10:24 am. Police observed one of the vehicles on the 3200 block of Sedgley St shortly after the crash and seized the vehicle for further examination. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
