I’m teaching English composition at an R1 for the very first time, and I’ve been pretty impressed with how much my students do want to understand and improve. I was expecting way less effort based on what I’ve seen online. Could be that those low expectations skew it, but I’ve loved their work.

Exactly. You earn your way into a person’s world by being normal and cool enough through small talk. I kind of think anyone who “hates small talk” just doesn’t care enough about other people to be interested in their day to day.
