And no one has ever asked me in the succeeding 30+ years what my grade was in Expository Writing 103 (or whatever the course name was)

I wrote a final term paper on the short stories of Isaac Asimov on the very morning of the already-extended-for-me due date (deadline 9 am). Put it in the wrong mailbox and got a zero (D for the course). But D or not, I became an expert on that topic. I LEARNED.

Thank you! I'm just creating a character now who needs a bit more back story than "she was born and then grew up." She's the Secretary of Migrant Affairs for a small nation. She's a little bit prickly, and now I'm thinking maybe that's because people are always underestimating her.

I write fiction. What stereotypes should I avoid when writing about blind characters?

Gosh, it sounds dreadful for both parents and kids! It's clear that there was a big and universal transition, and I have been trying to figure out what had caused it (in general, I mean). Thanks for giving some insights!

Oh, that explains some of it. And there's no option for a direct bus from your area?

I've been confused this whole time - didn't Comey essentially win the election for him the first time with his "we're still investigating her emails" bombshell days before the voting started?

The rapid change of norms, within a single generation, from "everyone takes the school bus" to "everyone has to be dropped off and picked up by the parent-chauffeur" astonished and horrified me when I visited the US after a few years abroad. I was basically that Paul Rudd meme.

I like the part where it's implied that someone would only have to have the intelligence of a schoolchild to understand the greenhouse effect - and that a denialist therefore is less intelligent than a child.

When you say, "Don't underestimate Macau" my first thought was that Macau was causing the typhoons LOL. But then again, is there any proof that they aren't?! They're capable of anything, those Macanese!

I once happened across a Cosmopolitan magazine from 1976. Apparently, the standard word at that time for a boyfriend you shared a place with was "live-in lover". Like, "Jenny and her live-in lover are looking for a spicy vacation spot." Why have we forgotten this amazing phrase?
