I think the Dem governors and mayors can and should do more, legally and nonviolently. some ideas off the top of my head
- order DOT to close roads near ICE facilities
- conduct routine power and water maintenance to facilities
- mire them in endless legal knots
- refuse any support whatsoever

I would expect no less.

Whether you're a casual news reader or a breaking news reporter at the NYTimes, I implore you--please, please, please--do not believe or report DHS/ICE/CBP's side of events uncritically. End the state's monopoly on legitimate storytelling. They are not the objective arbiter of what really happened.

"everybody has a smartphone these days lol" false. that's something you made up. only 91% of Americans have smartphones. those last 9% are still people who deserve services (and probably need them more than anybody else). that's still like 30.6 million people

Anyway, there's no reason to respect Whitney Cummings or to care about what she says and does.

The comedians in that room might not have come up with a idea for a show that would have been a hit, but they at least would have come up with something unique/personal/inventive, etc.

Just look at what Chris Estrada did when HE got a show! He was hitting the same rooms at the time.

Like, you're getting a primetime TV sitcom and the best premise you can come up with is "single girl with slacker boyfriend and overbearing mother tries to make it in the big city"?

Oh, and she's a little vulgar, but in a safe-for-network TV way?

The reason to make fun of Whitney's sitcom isn't that it was bad (which it was) but that it was lazy (which made it bad).

If ANY of the comedians in that room had gotten a network development deal like Whitney had (with the accompanying promo blitz) we wouldn't have wasted it on something so banal.

Another comic, a friend who I respect, then got up and kind of criticized the room, saying that targeting Whitney was pointless and seemed like sour grapes.

Now, I had already gone up, so I couldn't respond. But his point has stuck with me all these years.

Here's my rebuttal:

I was active in the L.A. stand-up open mic scene around the time that Whitney Cummings'self-titled sitcom was premiering.

The promotions were ALL over the city, with billboards, bus ads, bus stop ads, etc.

One night at BrewCo, 3-4 comedians had punchlines about Whitney, the show, or the ad blitz.

My not LA friends need to understand that it takes me over an hour to drive from East LA to West LA and that is why I will not join you on your LA adventures without extensive planning for it.
