That's a nice buck. I've been waking to the sound of gunshots at dawn the past week. I took the protective netting off the front veg garden beds. The first night, the deer broused the remaining peppers. The next night, they ate all the leaves from the eggplants. Can't imagine they liked them!

Oh, this was the rocky part. You might be surprised by Maine's Midcoast--a lot of sand on its beaches. (The ones here in Phippsburg--Head, Popham, Seawall, etc--often have shifting sands that stretch for miles before hitting rocky outcrops.) Downeast things change to granite--a lot less beachy! 😉

Just an excuse for a long walk in old woods. Olive oysterling is ... okay, culinarily. It's the very last of the late season fruiters around here. If I had to describe the way it tastes, I'd say it's rather bland, with a hint of burning leaves and wistfulness

One and three-quarters beehive stacks of split hardwood. Where I started today
Two beehive stacks of split hardwood. A little less than 3 1/2 cords. Where I finished the day, after deciding to complete the top of the closest stack with some four-ft long sticks. It looks very halloween-ish to me, like a witch's hat

Yeah, the switch takes some getting used to. Pros: No algo, no ads, no being fascist adjacent. Cons: Less reach, character limit, photie limit. (But the last two could be a benefit, as in, forced to be pithy and to take better snaps)
Ayuh, regards to NH!

So "holzhausen" already sounds plural
.
My German is non-existent
.
So plural would be holzhäuser?
.
Think I'll just call them beehive stacks, when they're done

Thanks, Bill. The two in front, fired four times, were fired upside down on posts the first three. The dark streaks are due to the frozen drips of crystalized ash on the rims running back into the interior when fired upright the last time through the flame

Woodfired bowls on a weathered hemlock board. The pair in back were fired thrice. The pair in front were fired "forthce"

A circular stack of firewood known as a holzhausen. It's composed of freshly cut and split hardwood, mostly oak and maple
A cord of wood is 4'x4'x8', or 128cu.ft. The cylindrical part of the stack is 7' across and 5' high and the volume of a cylinder=π•r²•h, so: 3.14x3.5²x5=192cu.ft., or 1½ cords. So about 1⅔ cords I figure, counting the roof
The wood under roof in the back of the holzhausen is drier, and will be ready by spring. Probably burn six or seven of the nine cords stored there next May
Finished the hardwood holzhausen
.
It will cure for a year, be ready to help fire the kiln next fall
.
I'll use the wood under roof in the background to fire next spring

It wasn't half though. It was a third of those eligible to vote. A third didn't bother, not to downplay the difficulty of. Maybe some of that ⅓ will find a way to do so next time, even enuff to overcome gerrymandering. If there's a next time. It took (half of) Germany 16 years and a world war.

A hollow, half-built circular woodpile--a holzhausen, or beehive stack--made from split logs of oak, maple, black cherry and a little yellow and paper birch, sitting on top of wooden pallets and concrete blocks. Currently about four feet high. The inside will be filled with wood, and the outer wall will move inward, like the top of a beehive, from this point on. Final dimensions will be some seven feet in diameter and the same in height
The inside of the holzhausen, to be filled with more split hardwood
Split wood under roof for next year's firings. Softwood (pine, spruce, hemlock) on the left, hardwood (oak, maple, cherry, beech, birch) on the right. There's room on the left for some more pine still to be split. Because I burn half hard, half soft, I try to keep one side exclusively for each. Hard for the heat, soft for the ash
Two piles of logs still to be split. Pine in the foreground, mostly maple behind
Started building a holzhausen on top of four pallets with overflow hardwood, mostly oak, maple and cherry
.
There's still some room under the wood storage roof for pine or other soft wood

A cord of split silver maple
Maybe a face cord of white pine rounds from three dead trees I felled and bucked yesterday
A cord of red oak. Broke down and bought it
Another cord of silver maple bolts and rounds, waiting to be split
Maple, pine, oak, and more maple
.
Wood processing for the kiln occupies me for several weeks in autumn
.
It will be placed under roof to dry over the winter, to be ready for firing in May
.
Oh yeah

Thanks, Bill. I had a few other pieces I glazed with oribe and refired. One or two came out well, like this one. The rest were a mottled matte pink and green--too much of a reduced atmosphere for oribe. I'll heat those up again in an electric kiln, to turn them the right color!
