I have worked with so many devs who justified their decisions with "because that's how $FAANG does it”.

My responsees move between:
1. Turns out, that's not how $FAANG does it
2. You are not $FAANG scale
3. You are not $FAANG maturity
4. That stack is way more complex than what we need

Maybe unsurprisingly, a very elucidating question to raise when picking technology stacks is “does your company have one of the largest market caps in the history of the earth?”

To add to this: FAANG companies can afford to throw an army of people at the maintenance burdens created by their systems. A lot of problems are way more tractable when you have a never ending supply of new applicants looking for money and resume boosts, bolstered by a ton of contractors.

After about a half hour, everything is right as rain. So the thing I’ve been turning over in my head is this: how can we possibly expect smart, nontechnical people to do the things we as an industry say are necessary to keep them safe when stuff like this is the consequence?

He was, rightfully, scared that the button that says “Delete Account,” would, in fact, delete his account. This is because he retired from an industry where buttons typically do what they say when pressed.

Why was he panicking? Well, the button to remove an account from your phone doesn’t say “remove account,” nor does the settings page note that you can resync your account at any time. No, the button says “Delete Account” in big red letters.

On to the tablet, an old iPad running an old iOS. I could not, for the life of me, figure out how to get it to show a login page. I guessed removing the account and then recreating it would be easiest. That worked. I went to do the same thing with the phone, and my uncle stopped me, panicked.

My uncle asked how I knew to do that, and I had nothing to tell him besides “over a decade of experience in an industry where that works far more often than it should for no discernible reason.”

Next we moved to the other laptop. This one wouldn’t even display a login screen. I figured something was stuck in a weird state so I restarted the machine, which got us to a login page.

He had no idea what macOS was, just that he didn’t want to lose his emails and was weary of agreeing to something with that language in it. After that, we had one machine re-authed.

All of his devices are running pretty old software, and he’s got two laptops, a tablet, and a phone to sync. We start with the only device that’s displaying a button to start a login, one of the two laptops. We go through the permissions flow, one of which says “macOS can delete all of your emails.”

You know who uses the word authentication to mean logging in? Tech folks, and that’s about it.

He explains that he got a security alert from Google telling him to change his password, which he did. Ok, cool, so he just needed to re-auth his devices. BUT, not one of them said “login,” they all said “authentication failed” with no other error.

Yesterday my uncle called me asking for help with his email. For some reason, his Gmail wasn’t syncing to any of his Apple devices. He came over for some tech support, and what followed was a master class in just how user hostile UX can be, especially for folks who aren’t steeped in technology.
