(I will say, I found the previous day to be an enormous relief. Up to that point I had seriously believed that they had much more street-level oomph than that. I had been holding my breath for years waiting for the unlikely but possible mass mobilization of militias or whatever.)

A lot of people have been fed a lot of information that leads them to believe that most or all claims of the harm being done are wildly exaggerated. I think that information is obviously not credible, but it’s a simple fact that people live in shockingly siloed information bubbles these days.

You’re misreading which is the umbrella term: every ethnic cleansing is a genocide. Mass-murder is present, but that’s not the defining feature here. It may or may not be genocidal (I think it obviously is but I know others disagree), but these do enter that territory:
