If nothing else, that Wired cover piece is weak af journalism, filled with insubstantial and unattributed gossip. It's like Gawker without the content. Did they start with the graphic and then work the story from there?

Looks like a 50 year old piece of kit. Only thing I can suggest is, if it's fully detached, carefully remove the loose bit of heatsink and see if the fault changes. It might be creating a short. Issues with dirty pots, dry joints are common at this age as much as anything. Needs a proper look-see.
