The massive Grand Canyon fire is burning out of control
The Trump administration's US Forest Service staffing cuts may have hampered the agency's ability to respond.
A wildfire that has closed the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park raged out of control over the weekend and is now the largest currently burning in the country.

F.B.I. Is Asked to Arrest Texas Democrats in Battle Over House Seats
This is a demand for unconstitutional, arbitrary power. There is no offense against the United States here. The FBI has no role to assist the State of Texas in becoming an authoritarian enclave.

The AI bubble is so big it's propping up the US economy (for now)
Plus how American professors are fighting back against the AI onslaught, a backlash over AI models in Vogue, and more.
Analysts show that capital expenditures on AI were so big over the last 6 months they added more to the GDP than *all consumer spending*. That growth is offsetting pain from the tariffs and slow job growth.
So the AI bubble may be propping up the whole US economy. What happens if and when it pops?

CBO: Republican megabill to cost $4.1T, due to higher borrowing costs
The measure is also expected to add trillions to the federal deficit.
Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill works directly against his dream of rock-bottom interest rates. The CBO just estimated that it’ll raise interest rates and therefore, borrowing costs by $718 billion over the next decade.

Silicon Valley's Push Into Transportation Has Been a Miserable Failure
The titans of tech brought plenty of disruption to our broken transportation system but delivered little in the way of innovation.
“Elon Musk admitted to his biographer that the reason the Hyperloop was announced—even though he had no intention of pursuing it—was to try to disrupt the California high-speed rail project to get in the way of that actually succeeding.” — @parismarx.com in @gizmodo.com
He’s always been this way.

The flap nearly says out loud what many have whispered: The unit's focus never changed, no matter what it has been called. If anything, sources say, the recent U-turn on the name is a signal that Yep is trying to shed much of the touchy-feely community approach with which Scott branded the unit.

The idea to revert to the former name came from the unit’s officers, according to a source in the department’s leadership. They argued that the unit's title fails to describe their work, which has continued despite the alterations.
