Beware of Radio Network Surveillance
Researchers at Germany's Karlsruhe Institute of Technology demonstrated a method for identifying individuals using standard Wi-Fi devices. They found Wi-Fi devices communicating with each other in a person's surroundings produce patterns based on radio waves that are similar to images captured by cameras. The individual does not need to have a Wi-Fi device in their possession, and special hardware is not needed to identify anyone in range of a wireless local area network.

The results suggest that while the sender of the notification has no effect, tool support might increase remediation when the sender is different than the institution providing the tool. The picture shows three people. It seems that one person is listening to what one of the other two is explaining. All stand in front of a table with a laptop and a bigger monitor that shows a QR code. There are several posters in the room.

In multiple user studies, we developed improvements for the different components of a verifiable online voting system. During the demo session, participants had the opportunity to cast their votes via the online voting system and to verify the accuracy of their votes using a second device.
