Clumps of Grass

Clumps of Grass, 1889

A young Fomitopsis ochracea growing attached to underside of old wood; shelf like fungi, this one has an elongated shape with surface colours of brown and gray, with pileus margins and underside an off-white. Cap surface is covered in drops of water from a rainfall (the specimen will later expel any excess moisture vis the guttation process).

Two spiky Common puffballs growing from amongst autumnal leaf litter. Taken with the flash on, highlighting every little spike, called "jewels"!

A different cluster of three puffballs - two the same size and one about half of both. Surrounded by golden-brown pine needles.

A (slightly overexposed) image of yet another cluster of puffballs from above. There were clusters like this across a large area, occasionally alongside elf cup stained wood.

Common puffballs! Another 'shroom I've not spotted before, found on the same day as the Green elf cups and practically in the exact same place! Super abundant in their little neighbourhood and all absolutely tiny.

A wet, blue-stained piece of wood with a small, very blue elf cup next to a hunkered-down woodlouse. A yellow leaf behind the wood provides fantastic contrast.

A more drastically stained and almost entirely blue piece of wood like a piece of oxidised copper among littered pine needles.

Close up on a dry piece of wood which is stained blue only on exposed facets, so that it looks like a rock cut to expose shards of crystal.

The underside of the previous piece of wood, where tiny fruiting bodies can be seen at the centre of the image. Close by, there are similarly shaped but yellow cups.

Was very excited to spot lots of wood stained blue-green by Green elf cups today! Small pieces of wood were scattered all over the place, and the fruiting bodies were generally on the underside (I flipped the pieces for the first and fourth photo).

A second photo from the side, better showing the stinkhorn pushing up out of the leaf litter, with a bit of its own "eggshell" still stuck to the top of the cap.

The small stinkhorn photographed against leaf litter. I managed to capture it here with two flies on. An animal had left some feces right next to it, but I only saw the flies give any attention to the mushroom.

Sun & Moon I I've been wanting to do some art with the classic sun and moon faces for a while, here's the first of a few...

enoki-style mushrooms with blue caps grow into a starry sky - under the ground, the mycelial roots are represented with negative space. one, from the base of an inquisitively leaned mushroom, reaches out to the feet of an onlooking figure.

not sure i ever posted this, some giant mushrooms for a project on the sidelines for now

a long strip of an image framed in grey. yellow lichen jones appears repeatedly on a green background, chasing himself through various blocky shapes formed by the edge of his own self. does that make sense? this one's hard to describe.

the first third of the long image, zoomed in. his wavy arms and legs form a rectangle in his first iteration. then, left leg and arm square against his previous self, one leg kicks forward in an L shape. a leg from the next frame kicks in from the right.

splayed out in both directions, this figure looks like he's falling and flailing. followed by a splayed-arm copy split with impossible reach. next, the legs, torso and right arm of the next figure, his head out of frame atop a giraffe kneck. one knee juts out in an unintentionally phallic splotch.

the head and a limp wrist jut in from the left. there's another figure contained on this page, the only with both arms and both legs on a single side. he's the first to be looking left, at his own hands. looking left again, the final figure is slouched out as if in bed, but with one hand up to his face.

still playing with this guy like playdough. this time he's been forced into tetris bricks. it's a long one.
loved how dynamic his poses can get even when forced into regular shapes. makes sense since he's a fun-gi (groan)

an old piece, square frame split in two between red sky and black ground. underground, the roots of a tree maze and worm towards a toadstool. Aboveground, the tree's branches curl around the setting sun towards the mushroom. In the roots and the sky, the soft lines of a jumper.

In a frame of a black and white geometric pattern (from the jumper) mushrooms writh up the orange framework impression of a pumpkin.

wanted some more texture with my digital stuff so used my jumpers. one old piece with the texture added, and one "new" (i did it at halloween but never posted it)

just picked up the audiobook - can't believe i haven't heard of this till now! looking forward to giving it a listen, right up my street
