I did Au with the kit lens for the longest time. It’s a f3.5 too. The important thing, and one I have a hard time with myself, is that you made the effort.

Lens is a Rokinon 14mm f2.8. And don’t think you need Au to practice. Just shoot stars, then you can mess with the settings and find the sweet spot. Then when there’s an Au, you’re half way there. 😊. I’m by no means an expert at any of this. YMMV 😊

Follow Dr Tamitha Skov. I think she is on here. You’ll always have a heads up on Aurora from her. She’s a heliophysicist that specializes in Au. When I shoot, I use full manual. Focus to infinity. On my D3100 I’d shoot ISO 800, 20-25 second exposures during 30 second intervals.

That turned out decent I think. Practice make perfect as they say. Do you remember what settings you used? And what lens?

I have a D3100 and it won’t do it internally, but both my GoPro and my Z50 will. Just got the Z50 so I’ve got a learning curve. It’s a little different than the D3100. I’m just happy to share. Sometimes I find people gatekeeper info

To me, software is the worst part of all of this. Thankfully both my cameras will do it internally. I used to use a device similar to an intervalometer that I got on kickstarter that worked well too. Forget its name now. I’d hope there’s better ones on the market now.

Thanks. The exposures were timed at 20 seconds (anything more than 25 or 30 will give light trails)with an interval of 30 seconds. Timer was set to start at 19:30 and I stop it when I wake. ISO was set to 1600. Hope this helps
