We'd also like to congratulate Representative Latyna Humphrey on the passing of HB 29 (regarding inmates' access to feminine hygiene products and showers). The bill received unanimous votes in both the House and Senate and now heads to Governor Dewine's desk. 🎉

We are thankful to Representatives Rachel Baker & Desiree Tims for standing up and speaking out against HB 234, and thankful to Representatives Phillip Robinson and Beryl Brown-Piccolantonio for doing the same against HB 485.

Last night, both House Bill 324 (attack on mifepristone, SSRIs, and other medications) and House Bill 485 (sex ed censorship) passed the Ohio House. ⤵️

HB 485 is censorship disguised as education. Young people will always deserve unbiased, inclusive, and comprehensive sex education free from stigma and shame.

Leo, Storyteller: “Ohioans deserve accurate, age-appropriate sex education, not curriculum produced by anti-abortion groups with a political agenda.”

Leo, Storyteller: “To be clear, the Baby Olivia video mentioned in this bill is not real and not medically accurate, according to medical professionals like the American Council of Gynecologists.”

Kio, Storyteller: “Ohio is the only state in the U.S. without state-mandated health education standards for K-12 schools… That's not just lazy policy - it's political indoctrination in education.”

Kio, Storyteller: “As a mom, I oppose mandating materials from *any* advocacy group, regardless of whether or not I agree with their position – this kind of political maneuvering simply does not belong in public schools.”

Kira, Storyteller: “[This bill] misleads youth, and the lack of quality sex ed will lead to health risks for generations.”

Kira, Storyteller: "In the bill, schools must include a 3 minute ultrasound video, but Meet Baby Olivia is not even an ultrasound — it’s AI.”

Danielle: "Ohio’s bill is also unique because it allows the Attorney General to sue a district or school for injunctive relief and damages, further usurping control away from districts and subjecting them to costly lawsuits if they don’t comply.”

Danielle: "Given its medical inaccuracies, the Baby Olivia video is inappropriate at any age or grade, but especially for young elementary students that lack an understanding of the concepts the video purports to show and how to gauge their accuracy."

Danielle: "Ohio is the only state without its own health education standards, and per the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), one of 13 states that received an “F” on its sex education policy rating."

Delia, Storyteller: "This information should be accessible to all, not just those who are training to become experts in the field."

Delia, Storyteller: "As someone with the resources and privilege of training to become an OBGYN, I should not have better access to sex education than the rest of Ohio’s youth. But under this bill, I would."

This bill is part of a broader strategy to attack sexual and reproductive health care, both across the state and the country.

HB 485 would require Ohio schools to show elementary, middle, and high school students a medically and scientifically inaccurate fetal development video.
