Is Chester Arthur drinking Lagavulin in that scene in episode 2 explaining his backstory? Because if so, that’s a top notch Easter egg by Mr. Swanson. Because I have to believe Nick Offerman had to have been behind that!

I admit I only know about Garfield's assassination because I grew up near the Jersey Shore town where he was brought to recover (they tried). I remember taking a field trip to Seven Presidents Beach as a kid. Didn't appreciate the historic nature of the story until adulthood. Can't wait to watch!

3 Screenshots from the movie "Back to the Future" (1985): First, a man with wild white hair in a white lab coat sits inside a futuristic car, speaking to a young man in a red vest. Subtitles read: "Of course, November 5th 1955." Second, the same man continues animatedly speaking to the young man, with the car's interior visible. Subtitles read: "That was the day I invented time travel." Third, back in the year 1955 the white-haired man wears a complex metal headpiece, looking surprised as he interacts with the young man by the front door.

Nov 5th 1955 - Dr. Emmett Brown slipped and struck his head on the sink. When he regained consciousness, he had a sudden, vivid vision: the design of the flux capacitor.

Young people in NYC absolutely showed out and there should be 1000 articles and profiles about this. Because we have had to put up with 1000 MAGA diner stories for years now.

The fascists are not inevitable. They're not unstoppable. They're not all powerful. They want you to think that, but millions turned out last month to call their bluff. And millions turned out today to claim our power. We will win.

New Jersey, it is the honor of my life to earn your trust to become this great state’s 57th Governor.

I promise to listen, lead with courage, and never forget who I serve.

Man. I just had a great idea for a book or a script...but it's just a seed. It could grow in at least three different directions. But the core image...oh baby, it's REALLY fun...

Honestly, Frakes could make for a fun narrator too...he has that cavalier tone that could make it seem lively. Of course, then you'd be left wondering...did the events in this story REALLY take place?

And in that pause between pitch and contact - longer than logic, shorter than hope - we remembered why baseball existed long before we judged a sport's value by viral moments and betting apps. It is the romance of failure. The mortal beauty of trying and missing seven times out of 10 and still being considered great. It is the only sport where patience is a weapon, and panic the surest death. You cannot simply run out the clock in baseball; you must face it, pitch by terrifying pitch, until it finally releases you.

Did not expect one of the best paragraphs I’d read about baseball would come from an Irish newspaper

β€œAmerica is the wealthiest nation on Earth, but its people are mainly poor, and poor Americans are urged to hate themselves. To quote the American humorist Kin Hubbard, 'It ain’t no disgrace to be poor, but it might as well be.' It is in fact a crime for an American to be poor, even though America is a nation of poor. Every other nation has folk traditions of men who were poor but extremely wise and virtuous, and therefore more estimable than anyone with power and gold. No such tales are told by the American poor. They mock themselves and glorify their betters. The meanest eating or drinking establishment, owned by a man who is himself poor, is very likely to have a sign on its wall asking this cruel question: 'if you’re so smart, why ain’t you rich?' There will also be an American flag no larger than a child’s hand – glued to a lollipop stick and flying from the cash register.

Americans, like human beings everywhere, believe many things that are obviously untrue. Their most destructive untruth is that it is very easy for any American to make money. They will not acknowledge how in fact hard money is to come by, and, therefore, those who have no money blame and blame and blame themselves. This inward blame has been a treasure for the rich and powerful, who have had to do less for their poor, publicly and privately, than any other ruling class since, say Napoleonic times. Many novelties have come from America. The most startling of these, a thing without precedent, is a mass of undignified poor. They do not love one another because they do not love themselves.”

Showed my students the Talky Tina episode of The Twilight Zone today. The gasps and audible reactions in the dark always bring a smile to my face. Over 65 years later and Rod Serling is still giving gifts to us teachers. My film kids love this time of year. They know TZ time is coming.

My head-canon for The Running Man is that this is a continuation of the Home Alone Universe, and Kevin’s home invasion games have been learned from and taken to a WHOLE new level. Glen Powell’s Ben Richards? Totally a witness protection name for McCallister. On to you @edgarwright.bsky.social !

Stripped for Parts: American Journalism on the Brink A handful of journalists rebel against a hedge fund that is gutting newspapers nationwide.

If you think you know why US newspapers died, this feature documentary now streaming for free on PBS might surprise you. It wasn't the Internet. Newspapers were specifically targeted by vulture capitalists.

I composed the score for the film, which features electric cello & Crowfoot guitars.
