Our Master student Abigail King just passed her viva with flying colours. During her stay, she cultured and differentiated hiPSC into microglia before analysing them using immunofluorescence stainings, and made excellent contributions to our lab. She is now looking for a PhD position in the UK.

I really enjoyed reading the early-career investigator commentary by Dr. Claudia Z. Han (WashU) on our recent paper in Biological Psychiatry: www.biologicalpsychiatryjournal.com/article/S000... . We are indeed planning to follow some of the further research directions that were suggested.

To discover this, we used human microglia transplanted into the brain of mice. This helps us create microglia that behave more like those in the human brain compared to lab-grown ones.

We found that human microglia that carry a mutation involved in familial Parkinson's disease get more reactive than control when stimulated with an inflammatory component. This suggests that they could worsen neuronal death.

Microglia are the brain immune cells. In stress or disease conditions, they can get reactive, and this can potentially make them damage neurons.
