No, You Are Not on Indigenous Land No, you are not on Indigenous land, argues Noah Smith. Pieces of territory belong to institutions, not to racial groups.

Noah Smith's assertions here lie in the assumption that Indigenous nations are not truly nations, but rather, 'racial groups'. This is neither true nor demonstrates a complete understanding of Indigenous nationhood.

It also opens the doors to further attempts to delegitimize connection to land, because it leads to definition of Indigenous nations at the genetic level, which then leads to the very tired arguments of "Actually, Native Americans are from Siberia, so they're immigrants too".

Not huge ones though, hence the adjective there. Back up cameras certainly do, and US car companies have used them as an excuse to make the SUVs and trucks bigger and bigger and bigger. We can't ignore that in the US. Do you at least agree that the size of SUVs trucks is a safety issue?

Of all of these - automatic breaking and seatbelt airbags are the obvious improvements. Cars shouldn't be big enough to have huge blindspots or need rear-view cameras.

And for the number of people that has saved in the car, it has made injuries and deaths outside of the car much more common. Car companies can say "we have blind spot detection and cameras, so we can make the car as huge as we want" increasingly lethality in collisions with pedestrians.

I won't debate 50 years ago. But, cars 15-20 years ago have most of the same safety features as today and were not as massively huge to be a danger to people outside of the car.

Cars today have a lot more fancy gadgets to distract people though!

This event was one of the most important toxic events in the postwar period that sparked the rise of the environmental movement and groundbreaking legislation to protect Americans from the worst impacts of industrialization.

This Day in Labor History: October 27, 1948. An air inversion trapped the pollution spewed out by U.S. Steel-owned factories in Donora, Pennsylvania. The Donora Smog killed 20 people and sickened 6000 others. Let's talk about this horrible moment and how it spurred pollution controls!

Stuff like this can be radicalizing.

When Anthonhy Burns was kidnapped in Boston in 1854 under the auspices of the Fugitive Slave Act, thousands of ordinary white and Black Bostonians responded with outrage like this and stormed the jail in an unsuccessful attempt to free him.

Normalizing mask wearing in the winter (especially between Thanksgiving and late January) seems like it would help a lot of people avoid getting sick, either flu or COVID. Hell even normalizing wear a mask when feel sick would help!
