Black-and-white historical illustration showing the Victoria Regia, a giant water lily, as it grows in the Amazonian lakes and side channels. The image features large, round floating leaves with upturned edges on a calm river surface, surrounded by dense aquatic and shoreline vegetation. The detailed depiction highlights the natural habitat of the plant in the river environment of the Amazon, emphasizing the size and spread of the lily pads across the water. The scene captures the botanical and ecological context of this notable riverine species in the early 20th century.

I picked up this gem last week in Rye. I love the Blue Note Reissue series. As a young fan in the mid-1970s, eager to discover and explore this exotic world, these and the Milestone/Prestige twofers were a great way to get a cheap double dose of fabbo jazz sessions with superb liner notes.

πŸ”†Good morning!

Dedication to work is to be admired, provided the work itself is of value, but the more of a day’s hours you devote to it, the likelier returns diminish.

Underground Conquest: Cave Exploration and Nationalism - JSTOR Daily As cave exploration became more popular and speleology developed as an academic discipline, cave explorers were drawn into a problematic European nationalism.

When cave science emerged in the early 20th century, early speleological communities became entangled in right-wing nationalism. Cave explorers became nationalist symbols, as "conquerors" of an underground world.

Was Carl Linnaeus Bad at Drawing? - JSTOR Daily Linnaeus has often been thought of as a poor artist, but visualization was a core element of his analytical tool set.

Historians have debated if Carl Linnaeus was bad at drawing, and how much he valued illustration. But Linnaeus used illustration and visual thinking at every stage in his career, even if some of his own sketches were a little... rough-and-ready.

The map shows the forecast for bird migration on the night of September 12, 2025. Note that activity is highest along the Mississippi and Atlantic Flyways and that the birds are avoiding the storms along the Central Flyway.

Bird migration forecasts show predicted nocturnal migration 3 hours after local sunset and are updated every 6 hours. These forecasts come from models trained on the last 23 years of bird movements in the atmosphere as detected by the US NEXRAD weather surveillance radar network. In these models we use the Global Forecasting System (GFS) to predict suitable conditions for migration occurring three hours after local sunset. These maps also show precipitation forecasts (outlined and shown in grayscale). Note, areas forecast to experience precipitation and bird migration may overlap, and predictions for migration intensity may be highly variable in these locations.

Colorado State University and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology currently produce these forecasts. Leon Levy Foundation, Edward W. Rose Postdoctoral Fellowship, and the Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission supported this research, with additional support from University of Massachusetts Amherst and University of Oklahoma. The BirdCast project was created with grant awards from the National Science Foundation and subsequently supported by awards from Leon Levy Foundation.

The BirdCast forecast map shows migration is very active tonight along the Mississippi and Atlantic Flyways.

How? BirdCast analyzes data from weather radars to separate bird migration from other activity: non-biological (rain, hurricanes, etc.) and other biological (bats, insects).
