This isn’t to excuse what’s clearly and utterly disgusting, just to note it is a pretty natural expression of American discourses of punishment and expectations for those we condemn. This administration is injecting that id directly into extrajudicial military operations.

The state murdering people for drug trafficking should shock the conscience but it is not shocking in the context of American punitive ideology which has, for decades, condemned people for drug offenses to any and all fates they might meet in prison.

What’s so striking about the current situation is that every administration this century has killed people much the same way — think of all the murdered bystanders in drone strikes across Iraq/Afghanistan/beyond — but only these guys insist on posting about all the murder they are doing on video.
