We’ve done a few trips to states through national parks and staying at and using independent hotels, restaurants and coffee shops, feel sorry for those owners but need to look at big picture

It was such a great place not just the museum but the arts venue as well, as school kids we had annual passes and spent so much time there learning about local heroes, such a loss to Durham when it closed, another case of knowing the cost of everything but the value of nothing 😑

So true, used to be so impressed by the Durham Light Infantry museum in Durham City, as it brought world events to a local and relatable level

RIP Alan Shoulder. Former NUFC striker signed from Blyth Spartans for whom he combined playing with his job as a miner at Horden Colliery.

His wages went from Β£14 a week to Β£300.

What a life. A working class hero is something to be. #NUFC

Word of the Day is one I keep posting at the end of the year, hoping its time will come.

β€˜Respair’, from the 16th century, is fresh hope, and a recovery from despair.

Here’s to a few drops of respair in 2025.

Louis Pasteur, a man who saved millions upon millions of people, was born on December 27, 1822. If he lived in today's world he would probably have thousands of people on Twitter demanding he be imprisoned because he "ruined their milk freedom".

A Czech billionaire has bought Royal Mail, Italy owns a UK rail franchise, China built our nuclear power stations, Canadian pensioners and Abu Dhabi bought our water companies, India our steel industry. And then the tabloids get upset when England hires a German football manager.

Wensleydale Blue Cheese

Wensleydale Blue Cheese

For all those out there not from Yorkshire (or the north of England), by far the best way to eat Christmas cake is with Wensleydale cheese. The cheese originated with French Cistercian monks from the Roquefort region, who settled at Fors Abbey and later Jervaulx in Wensleydale.

Iron & Steam - The Dawn of the Stockton & Darlington Railway The opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway on the morning of the 27th of September 1825 marked the birth of modern railways. Built by George Stephenson, this twenty-six mile long line in the north east of England was a significant milestone, and the beginning of a railway network that would eventually span the world. β€˜Iron & Steam – The Dawn of the Stockton & Darlington Railway’ investigates how this ground-breaking line came to be, as well as exploring the early mineral railways that led to this incredible achievement. Featuring the latest research and interviews with experts, the film tells the comprehensive story of the railway that delivered the modern world.

Next year the Stockton & Darlington Railway will celebrate its 200th birthday! It is important to remember that, although the railway is famous for steam locomotives, the first few miles were powered by stationary steam engines, gravity and horse power! All equally ingenious
