@gralefrit.bsky.social You have to see these! A friend of mine has been collating a series of images entitled "Things my students have written turned into Philomena Cunk quotes" and they're just glorious.

I do have the thread scissors of my dreams now though. Also pictured is the most gorgeous lace I've ever seen and I should have got WAY more of it because it was insanely cheap since the store is closing and I probably will not be back in NYC before they officially close...

In light of this, I want to share some resources on trans people in the medieval and early modern period, for anyone who might be interested. There is a thriving field of research into the lives, identities, and experiences of trans people globally before the advent of modern medicine (a ๐Ÿงต)

26. trans women scholars are underrepresented in premodern trans studies to the detriment of the field.

Ben and Jerry's pints are so appealing because the chunks of toppings are so satisfying to dig out. I always finish a pint 5x slower if there's no big chunks to mine for. It's like one of those dinosaur excavation kits you can buy for kids at science museums but if you could eat the dirt and bones

cis historians need to fight like hell for their trans peers, and that includes standing up to hostile colleagues and administrators. every single one of the tiny handful of trans women in the field faces shit like this, and much of it will be coming from people they work with.

2. sodomy as theological category and sodomy as actually applied in judicial practice could be quite divergent and some historians of sexuality have overemphasised the continuity between the two

We donโ€™t make much that would fall under โ€œadult contentโ€, but I think it is very wrong for payment processors to seize moral control of what can be sold.

โ€˜Adult contentโ€™ has long been the canary in the coal mine. And it is wrong and dangerous for art and creators to be attacked this way.

Let me add that AI can't do this. Consuming the historiography leads to new questions leading to new sources leading to new discoveries. This is a creative act. But facts alone are never enough. Facts must be interpreted. That means immersing oneself in historians' understanding of context.

legal history gets stereotyped as dry and pedantic but engaging seriously with this material exposes you to the discursive (and often literal) violence of medieval misogyny (and queerphobia, racism etc) just as if not more vividly than what you can get from literary sources

So far I know that Tryphine's story is depicted inโ€”at least as far as medieval primary texts goโ€”one of the Lives of Saint Gildas from the 9th century, and then in 1514 she is mentioned in Les Grandes Croniques de Bretaigne by Alain Bouchart
