Last week I was in Costa Rica with a delegation focused on supporting biogas development. Very interesting context with a lot of promise for waste-based biogas systems. Next steps should be the establishment of two small-scale plants, one focused on municipal waste and one on agri-industry waste.

Ever thought about how to view the circularity of energy carriers, which are "consumed" in their use and not possible to recirculate? 🧪

This is the topic of a recent publication by my Colleagues and I thanks to a great collaboration with the Swedish Environmental Institute. doi.org/10.1186/s137...

Redirecting

My colleagues and I explored two sustainability-related research areas, sustainability transitions and assessment. 🧪

We found that while the areas are beneficial to each other, epistemological and ontological differences provide challenges for such interaction.

Just finished an interesting day with the Swedish Biogas center. Two key take-aways: Anaerobic digestion of agri. feedstock kills most types of weed seeds resulting in lower spread than composting. Biomethanation is coming, whether it's 3,5 or 10 years out is a question of electricity and CO2 price.

Very interesting morning, my friend and co-author Qianyun Wen defended her thesis on data-driven decision support for the energy transition. While impressive developments are happening in AI and optimization, it is important to not forget about the human decision-maker! 🧪 doi.org/10.3384/9789...

Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) of Geomitigation of Greenhouse Gases

@eth-eaps.bsky.social is looking for an assistant professor to work on CO₂ removal (CDR). They say greenhouse gas but I don’t think we’re removing atmospheric CH₄ or N₂O. Lots of great people at ETH. Do apply by the end of this month! 🌊🧪

It's important to have a safe harbour during stormy weather. For me, nothing brings me as much relaxation and solace as being in the archipelago. Truly wonderful!

The last session of the Swedish Biogas Solutions Research Center just concluded. Two interesting days!
Many great presentations on basic and applied research. The sector will expand a lot in the coming five years with new plants and new technologies, methanation and post-digestion as two examples.

Scenarier för transportsektorns utveckling till 2030 och 2045

Two take-aways from preparing a lecture on the Swedish transport system's future: Road will increase while maritime and aviation looks to decrease slightly. Despite an overall increase in transport work, energy use need to be halved until 2040. Sources (Swedish): bitly.cx/tgFPw and bitly.cx/guea1
