Portland's development patterns centered around the streetcar network up until its removal in the 1920s. each dot represents an existing building, with oranges and reds showing buildings constructed after 1925.

Also 430 of the 438 spans for Segment 1 (East Kapolei to Aloha Stadium) were precast. Cast-in-place were only used for the segments that went over the H-1.

Here's an article talking about the Skyline construction (though the airport segment). It appears that it's preferred for the guideway to sit centered on the piers. Constructing straddle bents would likely cost more than moving the alignment.
