A bad but universal metric of public transit reliability is the % of a line that is in its own lane.

It is easy to create exclusive lanes where there is little delay, but not at the bottlenecks where they matter most.

So this metric says nothing about speed or reliability.

This is one of the stupidest fucking things I've ever heard.

People will bend over backwards to avoid saying that drivers have any responsibility to operate safely or that we should have better infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists.

"The left" is excited about literally every technology that doesn't destroy the planet basically. High speed rail, mRNA vaccines, cancer treatments, HIV vaccines. Just not the power guzzling, crypto fascist, mass-surveilled, racial profiling, techno dystopia that AI brings to the table.

is it my priors confirming or has there been a lot of odd downtime the past ~two years once LLM AI coding started to become a thing?

The AI bubble RAM crisis is caused for non-existent problems by non-existent money for a non-existent infrastructure to meet non-existent demand to make non-existent business and will utterly destroy real business based on real demand and real infrastructure built with real money for real problems.

There are tons of countries in the world that are able to raise taxes to fund different social programs. Healthcare, daycare, parental leave, social housing. All common.

Free transit, on the other hand, is not common. Especially in top-tier transit cities.

That might tell us something.

Graphic with a gradient background asks: Should a politician with 40% of the vote be able to unilaterally change post secondary funding and saddle students with thousands more in debt?

A news headline from GuelphToday.com reads: Students concerned about rising debt burdens amid Ontario OSAP, tuition changes, with a quote noting students could graduate with an additional 7,270 dollars in debt.

Text below states that proportional representation requires real majority support to pass major changes, not just a distorted majority of seats. The footer says Learn more at fairvote.ca.

A government can win 40% of the vote and 100% of the power. That is not majority rule. It is a flaw of first-past-the-post.

When big decisions about student debt are on the line, power should reflect how people actually voted.

That is what proportional representation delivers.

I'm obviously deeply disappointed UO seems to be doing business with the Boring Co. Aside from the issues with its owner, best I can tell the whole company is a scam.

Related to this scam thing.... how do they plan on building a tunnel in Florida?

I feel this way about pretty much all vaccine-preventable infectious diseases. You shouldn't be allowed to dump cyanide into municipal drinking water and you shouldn't be allowed to recreationally spread viruses around shared public spaces.

A Tunnel to Transform Los Angeles The ambitious Sepulveda Transit Corridor project — an automated subway line underneath Bel Air — aims to do something rare in LA: Get people out of their cars.

“A year after the $1.1 billion overhaul,” which added a new lane each direction, “the 405’s rush hour drive times were a minute slower than they were before the workers broke ground. Five years later, traffic was worse at all times of day.”

Having spent most of my working life in transport policy, this is the essential truth that so many people - including politicians with responsibility for transport decisions - don’t or won’t get.

To reduce congestion, you reduce capacity and reduce speed. The empirical evidence is overwhelming.

For These Old Bus Stations, It’s Not the End of the Line The streamlined depots built by Greyhound in the middle of the 20th century reflected a more optimistic era for bus travel. A lucky few are finding new uses.

I often take the underfunded & underperforming Ghound bus. This station is right downtown Cleveland & DOESN'T NEED A NEW USE. IT'S THE FUCKIN BUS STATION. Investing in intercity public transportation is what we need. I don't care how this shit gets dressed up, it is just punishing the poor like me.
