I would agree that Miura, Stratos, and 918 are the most ambitious cars of their times, but I don't think they reach a bar of significance here to go with the rest of this top tier. Similarly, I think Valkyrie and AMG-One are the champions of today, but neither is at this level.

The 918 existed, in part, as a halo for hybrid systems in the Panamera and the Cayenne. 919, hybrid GT3 R, and 918 RSR concept were also all selling it. Mission E later grew from it. Those were odd decisions at the time! Nobody really remembers this because that's the version of history that won.

Racing is the best way to understand the entirety of the Porsche hypercar program to date:

Cancelled LMP1 car - Carrera GT - RS Spyder - 918 - 963 are a direct line of shared R&D. 919 was a completely separate line, but 918 existed as part of the same electrification narrative.

Because it was part of what has now been a 17-year marketing plan around electrification that started before McLaren road cars existed again. The plan goes back to the flywheel hybrid GT3 R. Porsche knew it would be racing hybrids at Le Mans, so it had to sell one for big money at the same time.

A better framework for this is the outright champion of ambition for an era: F40, then F1, then Veyron.

Go back further and it's a straight line from Bugattis to 300 SLs to 250 GTOs.

The Ferrari decade car's job (being the flagship thing that Ferrari owners aspire to) has been rendered pointless by Icona Series and the McLaren decade car's heft has been erased by McLaren's modular business model.

There were no big threes. McLaren put out their decade cars opposite Ferrari's decade cars in hopes of creating this news cycle. Porsche simply made two unrelated hypercars out of projects lying around.
