Israel’s ecocide in Gaza sends this message: even if we stopped dropping bombs, you couldn’t live here | George Monbiot Consider the annihilation of agricultural land alongside the genocide – and grasp the chilling totality of this attempt to eliminate all life, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Important article.
For the Israeli govt the erasure of ecosystems & people’s means of survival seems to be a key strategic aim. It appears to be seeking what some have called “holocide”: the complete destruction of every aspect of life in Gaza 😢

Reprogramming 60 Years of Car-Culture Marketing - Streetsblog San Francisco Car ads and the resultant culture promotes traffic violence, according to a former car adman

“For 60 years, car advertising has programmed us that driving is freedom, that cars are how we get around, that driving — even reckless driving —is a symbol of status & power. But what if a car marketing vet (aka @tomflood.bsky.social)
used his skills to highlight the insanity of car culture?”

Dear Prime Minister,

I am writing to urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to request that the Speaker recalls Parliament from the summer recess immediately to permit an urgent debate on the UK government’s response to the Israeli security cabinet’s decision to prepare to take control of Gaza City, and the broader plan recently passed by the Israeli cabinet.

This is not a routine foreign policy disagreement. The reported security cabinet decision, together with the stated principles to “prepare to take control of Gaza City” and to impose long-term security control and demilitarisation, signals a major escalation that risks further catastrophic civilian harm across Gaza. Such a plan is yet another declaration of intent from Netanyahu’s government to commit breaches of international humanitarian law. The government must treat this with the urgency and seriousness that the possible breach of treaty obligations demands.

Under the 1948 Genocide Convention the UK has a clear and binding duty to both prevent and punish genocide. Where there are credible grounds to believe that actions or policies by a foreign government risk causing genocidal acts or facilitating conditions for genocide, the UK must urgently assess its legal obligations and consider immediate measures to prevent further harm.

Introduce targeted sanctions on all members of the Israeli cabinet directly responsible for approving plans that foresee a prolonged occupation or other measures risking large-scale civilian harm in Gaza.

Use the UK’s diplomatic weight with allies to press for an immediate ceasefire, unimpeded humanitarian access, the safe release of hostages, and an urgent international inquiry into allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

The risk that the UK could be failing to meet its obligations under the Genocide Convention is an issue that demands parliamentary accountability and public scrutiny. The consequences of delay will be measured in countless innocent lives lost.

For these reasons I request both that you write to the Speaker today asking him to recall Parliament, and that your office publish the steps you intend to take in response to this grave development.

I am, of course, available to meet to discuss this further.

Yours sincerely,

Ellie Chowns MP

Foreign Affairs Spokesperson for the Parliamentary Green Party

I am calling for Parliament to be recalled immediately in light of the Israeli security cabinet's decision. We must hold the UK govt to account and secure urgent action to alleviate suffering in Gaza.

Our leadership candidates are united on our bold, radical policies. So the choice is about a communication style targeting progressive activists or a broader appeal beyond that base. Under FPTP it’s the latter that wins Green seats. #togetherwewin

Adrian Ramsay superb on Today on the absolute necessity for the Green Party to make a genuinely broad appeal. Astutely points out that the explicit ‘99% vs 1%’ appeal made by Polanski does not resonate even with most Left voters, let alone with most voters who don’t self-identify as ‘Left’.

Adrian Ramsay very good on @LBC @IainDale, making crystal clear that unless one appeals to wide sections of the public (not just Lefties) one WILL NOT WIN in 1st-past-the-post elections: winning which, not coincidentally,he & Ellie are past masters at doing (while Zack never has). #LBCdebate

In #LBC debate, @adrianramsay.bsky.social setting out very clearly why the Green Party needs to keep to the clear strategy that's led to a doubling of councillor numbers & quadrupling of MPs in the past 4 years, & the risks of 'magical thinking' damaging the party's credibility.

Gaza hospital says 21 children dead from malnutrition in 72 hours as UN warns 'last lifelines collapsing' The UN says Israel must allow aid into Gaza, as a hospital director says 900,000 children in Gaza are suffering from hunger.

There are no words to convey the horror of 21 children in Gaza starving to death in the last 72 hours. There are no words to convey the horror of nearly a million more children being at risk of the same fate.

The UK cannot stay complicit in this atrocity.

This month we've seen more heatwaves.

Temperatures will keep rising unless we stop burning oil and gas.

The government can't claim to care about our future while backing new fossil fuel projects. That is why @UKLabour must stop new oil & gas extraction, starting with Rosebank.

When excellent MPs stand up for what’s right and then get suspended by their party we should be very worried. Chris Hinchliff has been a staunch defender of nature and is far closer to the public view than the prime minster. Such arrogance 😡. Great quote here from Craig Bennett, agree 💯 .

Former Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert has said Israel's plan for a ‘humanitarian city’ in Rafah would create a “concentration camp” if it goes ahead.

The already devastated Palestinian population cannot be subject to yet more unfathomable cruelty at the hands of Netanyahu.
