The short version lore-wise is those 18 broke up into literally unknown amount of chapters (people say around 1000). Here's a decent list of the ones we know about, but you can really get away with doing anything and saying its your homebrew chapter.

If you want to keep things easy looking up reference, the original 18 legions all have really strong color schemes and themeing. (#6 Space Wolves: Vikings, #10 Iron Hands: Cyborgs, #12 World Eaters: Gladiators, etc.)

You'd be pretty safe just looking up ref of whichever legion you think looks cool.
