• Professors should never put a student's words or work into an AI
software without their consent.
• Professors should also be transparent about their Al usage with grading, curriculum building, and any other way they might use it in their teaching.
• If a professor does use Al chatbots in the classroom, they should explain their reasoning behind this decision and how its usage will help students meet learning
outcomes.
• Professors should additionally respect a student's choice to refuse Al. To do this, it would be ideal that they have assignments that students can choose from that do

Working on the back-of-book synopsis for my forthcoming academic mystery. It reminds me of my days as an information organization editor (& later, professor) when I taught text abstracting. It wasn't easy then and it's still a challenge now!

I'm conflicted about whether or not to leave the items in the library. It's not too sizable. I'll monitor things going forward to make sure people aren't leaving generic or low-level items. Don't want the space to be seen as performative. 2/2

Someone added foodstuffs to our street library. Kind, but sad too. In 2 days the U.S. govt shutdown will eliminate the food assistance benefits program for nearly 40 million citizens; 700,000 Wisconsinites will be affected. 1/2

Had to spend a day on the couch after a medical procedure on my knee (ouch!) so I set up a little comfort TBR stack nearby. Between naps, I managed to finish one: Stephen Grosz, The Examined Life. A splendid work of insights, private pain, & partial memoir.

This whole thread! Am in SF-reading mode so am adding it to my WIP reference files.

But the rich sociology of its history, politics, memoirs...etc. Fascinating.

Just recalled when a male person I know stated that all the tea-drinking characters in Ann Leckie's Imperial Radch books were female because "only women drink tea." Years later I'm still agog.

The Gate to Women's Country was my favorite of hers. I liked After Long Silence & her early "True Game" books too. I found her a bit fierce & redundant but admired her work overall. I had the chance to meet her once, a very sparky personality & generous of soul.

Confession: I'm a very tetchy reader who finds the 1st person approach stylistically & narratively annoying. And no, won't name it. Others love this book. Fair enough.

Oh no...am I going to DNF this book already? A sentence that opens with "We haven't even been supposed...." Ouch! Jumped ahead just to see. Nope, lots of choppy, you-are-there-isn't-this-awful 1st person stuff that wants me to care & follow along. Hmm, don't & won't. There's no grace to it. 📚💙 🪐📚

The lady at the charity shop today told me that she wishes people would clear out their children's old toys in the lead up to Christmas rather than after because she always sees a number of parents in the days before Christmas looking for toys for their little ones who might be strapped for cash. She said there's very rarely anything in just before, but that they get inundated with toys in the days after.

And it really made me think about it in a way I never would have before. If you know your child is going to get lots of presents from father Christmas this year, by clearing out your cupboards a few days early you could make another child's Christmas a lot more special too.

Saw this & thought I'd repost

Marc Lobliner post on X: "Why the hell are we giving food stamps to 40 million people? Does anyone work anymore?"

SNAP isn't about "people who don't work." It's about people who don't get paid enough to live.

Of the 40 or so million people who rely on food stamps:

* Two-thirds are children, seniors, or disabled

* Most working-age adults who receive SNAP are employed—but in jobs that pay poverty wages

It’s also concerning. 1/

Hey fellow Wisconsinites, with the imminent hit on the SNAP FoodShare program, if you can swing it, perhaps you can set up a one-time or monthly donation to the Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin. Even a small amount helps those folks in need.
