But as the article explains, there's still a lot that both the city and Winnipegers need to do!

"Simply put, trees pay us back year after year. Cutting them down because a sidewalk panel is lifting is like demolishing a house to fix a leaky faucet. "

Water slowly to enable soil absorption and prevent run-off Conserve and recycle water
Important info from our friends at Trees Winnipeg:
"An urgent appeal to water your trees!
Winnipeg has received about one-third of the precipitation that it normally does at this point in the year, and there is no significant rainfall in the forecast as we head into the hottest weeks. ..."

14.06.2025 11:54 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0This could be a great opportunity for the city to do a pilot project/study to see if proactively spending on protection could prevent the later need for costly removals!
14.06.2025 11:54 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It also reminds of how important it is to keep mature trees standing. The cost of removing a mature elm due to DED is roughly the same as 10 years of protection with Arbotect!
14.06.2025 11:54 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This crowdfunding effort is a prime example of the passion and care that Winnipeggers have for trees, and has already raised $3800!
14.06.2025 11:54 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Mentioned in the story is a Wolseley crowdfunding effort to protect the remaining 170 boulevard American Elms on Westminster and Wolseley Aves.
The group is raising funds to protect elms with Arbotect, a fungicide that keeps Dutch Elm Disease at bay. Check it out! www.gofundme.com/f/help-save-...
"A city report reveals [elms] were chopped down more than expected last year due to Dutch elm disease.... the city had a 3.4% loss rate of American elms due to the disease in 2024, resulting in 6,616 trees being tagged for removal."[ target for loss is 2%].

And in 2019, the pruning rate was every 31 years.
Now, as of 2023, the rate for park trees has improved to every 13.8 years (target = every 12 years) and for boulevard trees is every 10.4 years (target = every 7 years).
In 2020, the replanting rate was an abysmal 20%. Only 1 in 5 public trees removed was replaced.
But, thanks to increases to the Urban Forestry budget, in 2023, the city reached 100% replanting!
This means means that for each tree that's removed, a new one is planted.
Our coalition advocated tirelessly for the recent improvements that Martha Barwinsky mentions in this episode.
Read on to find out how the city is better caring for our public trees...
