Oboes have a narrow double-reed mouthpiece, clarinets have a wedge shaped mouthpiece, usually black plastic or rubber. Clarinets also have a flared bell (the end piece )and oboes have a very small narrow flare to the bell by comparison.

I've been wearing my "fine arts" hat for so long it's easy to forget I'm also the kind of person who can turn on the classical radio station and think " oh, the Sibelius violín concerto? I haven't heard that in a minute." I might not play music any more, but it's still a huge part of me.

It also helps when you've bought out the apparatus in place to call out your lies and turned it into 24-hr celebrity gossip and nationalist propaganda.

As a gay man this is a power I cultivated my whole life. Now I'm trying to undo it and learn to be ok with taking up a little space for once. Politely, of course, I'm also Mexican after all.

I'm in the fine arts department, but know some film grads of course. Last semester they tried to cancel our MFA program without warning, but walked it back after huge pushback from the local art community.

No way, you're a UNO alum? I teach there and ummm...things are not great right now. They're firing all the adjuncts and asking TT faculty to teach 4/4 course loads.

"Transparent" as in "it's so easy to see through the grotesque facade to the hollow, soulless, self-serving core."

I was a master at that in my 20s. Now, at 42, the best I can do is add nuance and complexity. Oh and I'm an excellent cook now too.

I miss playing the one game we could afford on a TV we had to turn on using forceps because the knob was missing...

I'll throw some ancho or chipotle in with my beans too sometimes. There's so many ways to approach good cooking. I love talking about food too.

I'm too familiar with their works to confuse them but I could see how that would happen.

You may do this already for your refritos but if you fry onion and garlic in your oil first on a high temp (I do it till the garlic browns and the onion gets blackened in places) it's a total game changer. Also, epazote added to your beans = a natural smoky flavored carminitive.

I did this too actually. Made half of them into refritos and left the rest as what we call frijoles de la olla, which is just beans in broth (soup?) It's a staple in a lot of Mexican homes and nothing is quite as nostalgic for me as some homemade flour tortillas with a bowl of frijoles de la olla.

I live in hot soup so I don't actually dare to make soup (unless chilled soup like gazpacho) until at least October.

UwU is just doing the good work of spreading the word about the mysterious illness that shuttered the entire global economy and killed millions. Have you heard of this? Did you know?

When my tía passed I would start crying if I heard Brown-eyed girl because it was the music that played when you were calling her cellphone back when that was still a thing.

Evil is, by its very nature, aggressively stupid. It can only mimic intelligence. Real intelligence requires creativity and evil only co-opts creativity in service of wholesale destruction, even eventually self-destruction.

The general rule of thumb artists use when packing art to ship via FedEx is "will this survive being kicked and dropped from 20ft?" If you don't pack your work really well, it won't survive unscathed.

Absolutely nothing in my life prepared me for a public facing career in the arts quite like many years of working in kitchens, waiting tables, and tending bar.

There's a particular tenderness to the gallows humor of the bereaved that often comes off as morbid to those who like to avoid any thought of the inevitability of death. But for those of us who know, it sounds like nothing but love. I'm sorry you lost her. She sounds like a remarkable person.
