I'm not sure if I'm willing to argue the book still has value, but the argument would be that it shows a more self-directed form of gamification, a path not taken but that might inform a future in which we are able to wrest some technology away from the market.

Yeah I think it has elements of tech-optimism, biohacking etc but it was the water we were swimming in at the time. In 2011 we were still talking about "Twitter Revolutions"! It certainly didn't occur to me reading it then that she was being too optimistic about where tech and gamification was going

I read it much closer to its release date than now, but what I might say in her defense is that at the time it was not clear that, first, video games and then everything would be swallowed by one game: the slot machine. The book assumes a more horizontal playing field.

Like... would Netanyahu like getting arrested in New York?? It's not clear to me that he would, actually. Seems like it might remind people of his trial back home, it might crack the facade of unanimous US support for his project. Is he eager to travel to countries that might serve the ICC warrant?

Yeah like from a public opinion view being more ideological (in either direction) tends to correlate with paying more attention to politics. So in a way this is telling us something we already know: the current Republican coalition includes a lot of people who don't pay much attention to politics

Yeah the way the statements are worded is weird to me. Some (abortion and immigration) are absolute statements on the far right side and others are more like "the government should spend marginally more on this." That's part of why I'm curious which items are which in the graph

If I remember correctly, in Voyage of the Dawn Treader Aslan appears to the kids as a lamb as well. I'm not super up on furry culture, so I'm not sure what we would call this. For Lewis, does Jesus's fursona have a fursona?

(And I do think the assumptions here are coming out of the sokal hoaxes, no one is keeping up with the literatures of like ten fields at once to make this critique for real)

I agree with you, but I do think that the general direction of polisci is liberal in the enlightenment sense of more liberty, more prosperity etc is good. A lot of academia that was not part of the sokal critique is now "liberal" because we have a party that is against the enlightenment project

This is what David Brooks meant when he said a conservative had texted him that Kirk was their George Floyd. They didn't mean that Kirk was a victim of a profound injustice. In the conservative mind, Floyd was used as a symbolic pretext to reorient society. They want to use Kirk that way.

Since ppl love campus anecdotes so much, here's one: I have colleagues who give students they know to be MAGA an A (in one case I'm aware of overlooking clear AI use), because the colleague is on a Green Card or H1B, and they know: one complaint like at Texas A&M, and they're on a flight home. People get mad at liberals for bad reasons, but a good reason to get mad at liberals is when they think everything is speech. Like tweeting is speech and exercising your power is speech and ending democracy is speech. It's all a "difference of opinion"
