In time for #EarthScienceWeek our paper published in Nature Communications today explores how mantle plumes can act as an anchor โš“๏ธ and impede spreading ridge migration.

BUT if the plume weakens, it can de-anchor from the ridge and facilitate rapid ridge migration.

Very proud of Sydney Uni PhD student, Chris Alfonso, who just published his 1st paper in GSA Bulletin! ๐Ÿ‘ This project used spatio-temporal data mining (powered by #pyGPlates + #gplately) and machine learning to help find new porphyry copper deposits.

Very nice to host @geoniette.bsky.social at EarthByte as part of our Sydney Uni ๐Ÿค Glasgow Uni Ignition Grant on how variations in subduction angle affect volcanism and porphyry copper formation. A great start the year with lots of productive conversations and collaborations!

Ancient groundwater: Why the water you're drinking may be thousands of years old As surface water diminishes in the Western US, people are drilling deeper wells โ€“ and tapping into older groundwater that can take thousands of years to replenish naturally.

In Australia, the absence of relief in the interior means that the timescales of groundwater flow can be even older ... maybe even millions of years.

And, interestingly, this means that tilting due to dynamic stresses from the mantle may influence the flow patterns.
