No doubt they did! In many groups that I've moderated in the past 5 years, people have spoken of their own, or family members', experiences of trying to move to Australia, and mentioned requirements like having your own funds. IMO this too is a big reason for Oz's perceived toughness.

Not to be boring but it's not just how they deal with boats. It's the fact that *a lot* of British people go to Australia, so it's an immigration system they experience from the other side, as it were.

It's better to use limited bandwidth to tell people stuff that's true than to elevate lies. Even if your intention is to explain why the lies aren't true, you've accepted the opposition's framing and made more people aware of the lie than were in the first place - many will believe it.
