Dan Kelemen observes that "national narratives show no sign of converging" and that the book "reminds us that the future of the EU will remain rooted in varying – and sometimes conflicting – understandings of the meaning of the integration project."

Erik Jones notes that, despite the cross-national differences that it maps, the book shows that "there are powerful themes that resonate across the Union", but warns that those that "normalize participation in the European project as part of the national experience ... cannot be taken for granted"

For Frédéric Forêt, the volumes is "essential reading", and “a timely reminder that the main stories about Europe are told by national governments, in national terms, for national audiences ... European integration is here to stay, but on the terms of each Member State”.

We are delighted to have endorsements from several distinguished academics. Catherine E. de Vries calls the book "a must read" that carefully outlines "different national perspectives about Europe, what lies behind these differences, and what these different national perspectives have in common".

While much of the discussion is concerned with narrative-making at the EU level or looks at different societal understandings of the the EU, we chose to focus on how governments justify and explain their decision to join, remain in or leave the EU. The book looks at twelve European states.
