Either way I’m saying this as I queue up a few more horror novels (including some Southern Gothic) in my reading list so I’m obviously not that deterred lol. Could also be I just read more short stories when I was younger and more susceptible to being spooked thus they stick with me more.

Yeah, good call on the prior convo because it is once again a thing of me wanting to truly be scared/chilled/creeped out. I suspect it’s more easily achieved in short stories bc it’s easier to maintain suspense, maybe scarier with less info. Maybe feels more like a ghost story told around a campfire

Hot take but I’m just not sure horror is well-suited for the novel form. The best horror literature I’ve read has consistently been in the form of short stories.
