Conservatives are obviously in bad faith, but much as I hate them, they are doing way more than the left on this. As an Iranian I've been appalled, betrayed, disgusted, you name it--by lefties either being silent or actively parroting regime talking points in the midst of a massacre.

I use behoove all the time! It's a great word that it would behoove people to use more often.

Luckily, my husband and I are both fans of classic literature and can drop some of these words in our conversation to each other, while studiously avoiding using them with anyone else for fear of being outed as the absolutely insufferable nerds we actually truly are.

See, I thought they had tons of passion. Is passion just...yelling? I didn't find it slow or friendly at all, it was very yearning and hot to me in the way of Jane Austen novels. I felt genuine passion and emotion much more with Colin and Pen. I still get butterflies from their eye contact!

Colin is too hot to have syphilis. Benedict, though, for sure has syphilis.

The problem is this man is much less attractive than Colin, has a cold fish personality, misunderstood her whole personality and hobbies, and abandoned her to get killed by a balloon lmfao

Same here, and so did my husband...Bridgerton is a silly, inaccurate, fantastical soap opera. The writing often misses the mark. The costumes are ridiculous and have been from the start. But it's fun! But don't engage in the fandom if you value your sanity--it's craaaaaaaaaazy.

Oh man, could not disagree more. I wasn't that into the S1 and 2 romances but LOVED Colin and Penelope in S3, especially Colin! Neither of the previous male leads floated my boat--Simon was too aloof and Anthony was too mean for me. But I've always loved gentle men.

As an Iranian American, I'm hoping to also see more from you on the atrocities currently being committed by the Iranian regime against its own people and whether Trump sold out Iranian protestors (spoiler: he did) by promising help that never came.

All I can say is, thank you for publishing this. I'm an Iranian American working within the progressive movement and I feel so profoundly betrayed by my fellow progressives. This expressed all my feelings exactly. If we can't stand for human rights always and everywhere, what are we even doing?

How is it hypocritical for Iranian immigrants to care about what happens in Iran? I'm one of them and I'm so happy this was published. The left needs to hear this right now. Trump is of course an authoritarian and hypocrite but frankly it's more painful to be betrayed by your friends.

Thank you for writing this. It expresses all my feelings as an Iranian American on the left. I feel like I'm losing my mind and am even rethinking whether I really belong on a left that I feel has profoundly betrayed my people in their time of greatest need.

It is valid to be wary of U.S. intervention anywhere—certainly, the United States does not have a glittering track record, and Trump is only adding to the lowlights of American foreign policy—but to write off what is happening as a U.S. (or Israeli) masterplan does a disservice to the people of Iran, who have been doing everything they can for decades to fight their oppressors. They are not pawns in some geopolitical game. And perhaps an uncomfortable truth for some is that they need our help.
In 2009, when millions of Iranians took to the streets to protest a stolen election, they called on then-President Obama for his help. “Ya ba oona, ya ba ma,” they chanted in the streets, a pun on Obama’s name that translated to: “You’re either with them, or you’re with us.” Their calls went unheeded. Whatever happens this time around, all I know is this: The Iranian people deserve to be free, and they will be soon; whether the American left wants to play a meaningful role in their liberation or continue to defame them is their choice to make. But Iranians have long memories.
I wrote for @newrepublic.com about how I'm sick to death of how the left is talking about the protests in Iran as people are being killed in the streets:

The protestors in Iran aren’t violent - they are resisting state violence and authoritarianism, just like the protestors here.

Standing up to a tyrant - who is willing to impose pain as leverage to compel loyalty or acquiescence - is hard. You can convince yourself that yielding stops the pain and brings you back to "normal".
But there is no "normal". Submission emboldens the tyrant. The threat grows.

The average SNAP benefit per month is $177 a person.
The average ACA benefit per month is up to $550 a person.
People want us to hold the line for a reason. This is not a matter of appealing to a base. It’s about people’s lives.
And working people want leaders whose word means something to them.
