Talking about nonexistent "super intelligent" machines is like talking about the Cookie Monster rather than corporations creating real things causing harm. A non existent machine god bringing apocalypse or utopia is a framing that is harmful. Period.

This is an extremely good story about whistles and a person who is trying everything she can to help her neighbors 👇

People can say it’s utopian or dreamy but it’s a fact that you have to believe new things are possible, fundamentally, in order to make them real. You have to make the choice to believe that more than this is possible & not be resigned to this being the way things have to be because it’s not at all.

Anywhere that you are working, signs in shop windows, stickers and flyers on utility poles, and signs in the windows of homes repeatedly tell you that this city is not for you. And when you go back to the hotel, it’s the same. People know you are staying there and they do their best to make you feel unwelcome. All the cheery language on the hotel signage cannot undo your awareness that you are despised. JD Vance and others claiming that what you are doing is supported by most people rings false. You say it doesn’t keep you up at night, but it usually does. You look at the key access fitness center and windowless hotel meeting room and wonder if they could be used to temporarily detain people. You change the channel on the TV in the lobby to Fox News without having the courtesy to ask if anyone minds. They do, and they instantly change it to something else the second you leave. You call the front desk and demand that Univision be blocked on all the television sets. You contemplate the condiments at breakfast and wonder what Tabasco sauce feels like in your eyes.

Looking at the choice of white or black briefs, you grab a pack of the black. You practice your yelling at people skills by screaming commands into pillows. You do this exercise until your pillows are soaked with saliva. You call down to the front desk and tell them you need fresh pillows. Now. You’re drinking, doing steroids, leaving weird comments on e-girls posts, cyberstalking your ex-wife, Googling ways to get out of paying alimony, alternating between watching porn and Andrew Tate and doing some sports betting. You ask ChatGPT to write an epic poem about how you did your own research to prove vaccinating your dog against rabies would give them autism. You make your own essential oils out of products from the vending machines. You rest your hand in the ice bucket to numb it so it feels like someone else is touching you. You pass the time by committing domestic violence on your at-home family via text messages and Facetime. You lie awake at night, troubled that the other officers didn’t laugh as much at your racist joke as they did that other guy’s.
