Chicago has an underground pedway that is great for getting around downtown when it's cold, but there's not a lot of businesses so it doesn't really pull from street life. IMO aiming for something like that would be the best future for our city bc when visitors see empty streets they just leave

I worked in the St. Paul skyway for years pre-covid and personally I would have felt no great loss if most the businesses moved to street level. The space can still be there for movement, they are great for ppl w disabilities, but they detract from urban life so much that I feel no love for them

May-October is six months and I'd say they're all definitely warm enough for outdoor cafes, add patio heaters and you can probably do April and November, too. That's enough IMO for the city to incentivize building more of them.

The city could do things like tax credits to incentivize building owners to create street level storefront space and move businesses to street level instead of the skyway. Just bc the skyway is there doesn't mean we need to use it.

I used to take the stone arch to my office in NE and only changed when forced to by the closure - turns out it's infinitely nicer to bike over the 3rd ave bridge and now I won't go back! Also bc of the weird angle with which the stone arch hits the city's grid it just rarely makes sense to use.

He's in the hospital with 12 broken ribs, but is expected to make a full recovery.
