I don’t do the disability advocacy thing out loud as much anymore, but being at school this week had me thinking about the way well-meaning abled people move to help and what actually helps.

This is not shaming anyone. But I appreciate when folks who do instinctually help move intentionally. 🧵

There is a kind of mouse that has been bred over decades to be suitable for skin cancer research. They are *ridiculously* expensive. They're also living animals. You have to feed them and clean their enclosures and take care of them, or they die.

I do this even for our smallest local conference. It's the right (and not *that difficult*) thing to do!

Disability is not a vacation.

It’s not like that time you took a week off sick from work.

It’s a 24/7 job. It’s unrelenting pain, fatigue and suffering.

It’s dealing with a medical system that ignores and gaslights you, a society that views you as expendable & people who resent you for existing

I'm really interested to see studies like this and with bigger sample numbers- how I describe my quick muscle fatigue to my PT is like: that lactic acid buildup feeling that I used to get after a long workout, I now get in my arms when I try to fold laundry for 30 seconds.

long covid disproportionately impacts the already disabled, the poor, trans and queer people, working class people and BIPOC. and as soon as ruling class realized this, they clawed back all welfare state expansions and set about creating the sociological end of the pandemic

PSA: There’s a difference between wearing a mask or respirator & wearing a gaiter or face covering to disguise identity. It’s important to discern & communicate this nuance because if you don’t, you might encourage elected officials to ban masks for everyone, which would be a public health disaster.
