Today's installment of "Ross Douthat Is Wrong About Everything"
06.11.2025 02:08 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I think the real question is a slightly different one --- do you want to sign a statement from an organization that also asks Steve Bannon to sign?
25.10.2025 21:41 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0"Simply put, the Geometry Problem is that cars are much bigger than humans. ... these physical differences mean that when we optimize places for cars, they end up not working well (or working at all) for any other mode. They become *car-only* places."
Great post, lays it out very clearly.
This oneโs live on the Tube now. The more I think about this Loop stuff the more insane it gets

But I'm trying to short-circuit an obvious memetic strategy by making it seem ridiculous and played-out as quickly as possible.
Whoever frames first, wins.
Trump, Carr, Sinclair, Nexstar, MAGA and the GOP badly donโt want you to be able to watch this. Sinclair and Nexstar are still banning it (I couldnโt watch it last night via Seattle). So it seems like every single one of us should watch it and share it on YouTube if they havenโt already. #Kimmel
24.09.2025 16:51 โ ๐ 172 ๐ 74 ๐ฌ 14 ๐ 3what this latest episode shows is that like all fascists before them these assholes are highly afraid of being ridiculed so therefore we should ridicule them a hell of a lot more

Fair. But thatโs not the point.
โNot everyone can or wants to bike. But some people can & doโand they deserve a safe, efficient, affordable way to move through the city. Itโs about freedom of choice.โ
This & other useful comebacks, in @momentummag.bsky.social.
New, from me:
America is no longer a functioning democracy. It is a competitive authoritarian system, hurtling rapidly toward authoritarianism.
This was a hard piece to write but we can't move forward if we donโt acknowledge where we are.

There should be an option for legacy versions of everything - ones without all the handholding and assistance. Because itโs pushing those familiar apps to do what you want, not necessarily what they were designed to, that is the essence of doing a job professionally.

It's literally a vital feature of both science and of representative democracy.
I've written a fair bit about trust in expertise as a vital mechanism in the collective epistemology of science.
Dems should lean into sneering cosmopolitan elitism imo

Highway filled with cars
Next time someone tries arguing that itโs โsocial engineeringโ (cue ominous music) to give people more CHOICE to walk, bike & take public transit in their city, tell them that designing our current car DEPENDENCY has been the largest and most damaging social engineering experiment in human history.

Hey, remember when car and oil companies successfully lobbied governments to create car dependent cities and suburbs, and once we became almost completely car dependent, WE became the loudest, angriest champions of unhindered road space for cars, unnaturally cheap gas, and subsidized free parking?

06.07.2025 08:51 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The term common sense isn't salvageable because it's a deliberate dismissal of expertise. All the best ideas fly in the face of common sense, like the law of induced demand and the high cost of free parking. Let's bury common sense in the desert and restore proper respect for experts instead.

Corrupt as hell. Truly running for Eric Adams's 2nd term.
If you want to defeat him, tell everyone you know to rank Brad Lander and Zohran Mamadani 1st and 2nd (or 2nd and 1st).
And don't rank Cuomo at all.
This is very good and articulates a set of stakes that haven't received any attention. Please spread it around. Stopping Cuomo is one important piece of protecting democracy.

Like so much of modern life "self-driving cars" are seen as this singular technology that exists to either be celebrated or scorned, but in fact there are huge differences between various approaches/techniques... at every turn Tesla has taken the riskier approach, and we're about to pay the price.
