Bronisław Czech went from three-time Olympian to resistance fighter. During WWII, the Polish winter sportsman acted as a courier, bringing people & documents through the Tatra Mountains. Arrested by the Gestapo in 1940, he was deported to Auschwitz, where he died after 4 years of inhumane treatment.

Rudi Ball was one of Germany’s first ice hockey stars in the 1930s. At the 1936 Winter Olympics, the Nazis used him for their propaganda, presenting Germany as welcoming, even though his father was Jewish. Rudi agreed to play so his parents could emigrate. In 1948, he followed them to South Africa.
Edith Steiner and John MacKay spent 71 Valentine's Days together – the last in 2017, the first shortly after the war in a DP camp. The Hungarian Holocaust survivor and the Scottish soldier met there at a dance. They got married in 1946 and spent the rest of their lives together. #ValentinesDay
In 1936, Norwegian ski jumper Birger Ruud won his second Olympic Gold Medal in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. As he refused to take part in their propaganda competitions, the Nazis imprisoned him for several months in a concentration camp near Oslo in 1943.

On February 13, 1940, Anna, Arthur, and Adolf Grüneberg were forced to leave their home. They were deported to occupied Poland along with around 1,100 other Jews from Pomerania. Only 19 survived.

In Thessaloniki this week we were able to return 2 rings belonging to Christos Taktikos to his son Antonio. The Nazis had confiscated them from Christos when they arrested him for helping a Jewish couple. When the rings were returned, Antonio said they were the best gift he had ever received.
