It’s not my birthday unless I’m reading a spooky book. Here’s to another trip around the sun.

I keep returning to this clip. I came of age during the alt-right YouTube days where "pwning feminism" drove clicks. And I'm watching it all happen again, this time with billionaires funding and fueling boys' insecurities, creating broken, toxic men who hate everyone - including themselves.

There is a clear through line from "small usages" of AI to things like AI actors, which some are already trying to introduce and normalize.

The capitalist machine will follow the money, and if there is no public backlash to "small" uses of AI now, there will be none for larger uses down the line.

But given how small the detail is, I've seen the consensus online formulate to some version of: well, it's just one photo. I saw a similar type of discourse when LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL came out, that we shouldn't negatively judge a film for one small instance of AI usage.

Watching VHS Halloween and enjoying it so far, though I noticed what looks like an AI photo in the first short film.

It's a small detail, especially in a very well directed short film (with some great creature and set design) but that makes the usage of AI all the more disappointing.

Don’t Fear the Reaper popped up in my playlist for the first time in forever during my drive home, with the sun setting behind the mountains, and now I have some ideas brewing that I need to scribble down.

As a Yankees fan, I feel your pain. I saw Kahnle starting the 15th I was just like β€œwell, that’s probably game.” 😬 Still haven’t forgotten him loading the bases with nobody out in the World Series last year.

"They're trying to convince people they can't do the things they've been doing easily for years - to write emails, to write a presentation. Your daughter wants you to make up a bedtime story about puppies - to write that for you." We will get to the point, she says with a grim laugh, "that you will essentially become just a skin bag of organs and bones, nothing else. You won't know anything and you will be told repeatedly that you can't do it, which is the opposite of what life has to offer. Capitulating all kinds of decisions like where to go on vacation, what to wear today, who to date, what to eat.
People are already doing this. You won't have to process grief, because you'll have uploaded photos and voice messages from your mother who just died, and then she can talk to you via AI video call every day. One of the ways it's going to destroy humans, long before there's a nuclear disaster, is going to be the emotional hollowing-out of people." - author and filmmaker Justine Bateman from a piece by Emine Saner for the Guardian

Couldn’t agree with this more. Not only does our algorithm-focused entertainment model trap us in binge-watching loops, it also prioritizes the safe and the nostalgic over all else - encouraging endless rewatches of Friends or The Office over a new show or an original movie.

Happy birthday to @stephenking.bsky.social!

When I was a teenager I wanted to start reading some of his books. My mom recommended Needful Things, because it wasn’t too scary, but I checked IT out from my library and read it every day for the next 2 weeks. I’ve never looked back.

The first time I remember really understanding the depth of Robert Redford’s acting was in ALL IS LOST. Sure, I loved him in ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN and his other classic performances, but this role - so anchored in his silence and his expression - blew me away.

RIP to an immense talent.

Robert Redford playing a gentle incarnation of death, coming for a frightened old woman in The Twilight Zone episode "Nothing in the Dark" (1962). An extraordinary performance then, terribly bittersweet today

The MSNBC commentator saying that most political violence has historically come from the left just once again showed how we suffer from failing to learn history. Lynching, pogroms, race riots, the political violence that ended Reconstruction, and against the Civil Rights Movement. Come on.
