Has your husband lived in Britain for a longer period of time? It took me a while. It is so different in Germany, I had to get my head around so many issues (private schools etc...).

I won't try to convince you, I really thought they would be better. My MP is Corbyn who was kicked out of Labour, so in order to get rid of him, voting Labour is actually an option.

I heard Corrections is great. Unfortunately, I read Freedom first and found it so boring that I never felt like reading Frantzen again. There are so many other great American writers I read instead that is alright if I missed something reading Corrections.

I do. Some of my work concerned Oberschlesien but I find the whole area interesting and hope to visit one day.

I lived in Würzburg for almost 5 years and 2 in Nürnberg - I love both cities but frängisch is not my favourite German accent, so never even tried to do it. I will always have a German accent - which is totally fine - but I like British English and do my best to blend in.

Just one thing if I may: St Stephan's is a Catholic church and for me although we are all called Christians, I feel I have nothing in common with Maga evangelicals.

I know this is unrelated but never leave Frankfurt station through the main exit intending to walk towards the centre. It is horrible. I had forgotten and did that 2 years ago, now I would only take the U-Bahn or a cab. That was daytime (don't want to know what is going on at night).

A dark bedroom and it seemed to take forever to get better. Measles are highly contagious but miraculously my younger sister didn't catch it.

But when it arrives the ICE is just so nice to travel with. And it is easier to buy a ticket (just one provider). And we have a Deutschlandticket. Actually I prefer not to leave London (only to go to Heathrow and that can be done on the Elizabeth line).

I think you have been lucky. I wasn't (18 years) and neither were my children in their schools (they did't even speak and they have never lived in Germany but it's the surname that caused offence). I sincerely hope things will improve. Don't stop speaking German to your child she'll love it later.

I agree. In this case there were different reasons.

About 6 years ago in an FT magazine you and others wrote about their reasons to become vegans. It influenced me about 50% - I am now a vegetarian.

Starting school for the first time can be daunting, so children in Germany are given a 'school cone' (Schultüte) filled with goodies (usually sweets and stationary) to help them ease in to their new routine. 🥹
